First Victorian Hat Champion

Victorian Victory!

Christina McAlpine takes home the first Victorian Hat Competition Trophy.

Congratulations go to Christina McAlpine who won the trophy for the first Women’s Victorian Hat Competition. Nearly a dozen contestants lined the stage before the judges’ panel to parade unique designs outfitted with flowers, ribbons, feathers, and bows. The judges agreed it was a difficult decision because the entries were all impressive and unique. Christina nudge ahead to capture the championship which was well deserved according to those looking on. Her short-brimmed hat was stylishly adorned with red, orange, and amber tones in flowers, ribbons, and long feathers dynamically trailing off the back. Her complete ensemble pleasantly complimented her crowing jewel.

All the way from Baltimore, Christina and her husband learned about the Victorian Chautauqua and booked accommodations as soon as they could. The couple took advantage of all there was to offer including getting hand-cut silhouettes by Lauren Muney, a tintype photo from Chris Jones, and a private tour of Mountain Lake Park in an authentic Ford Model T. They also enjoyed the live performances and historical portrayals throughout the day.

In advance of the competition, The Garrett County Arts Council provided a hat-making workshop led by fashion historian, Courtney Cauthon, AKA The Barefoot Historian. While teaching the workshop, Courtney also shared interesting facts about Victorian fashion. Her guidance helped the hatmakers select colors and materials indicative of the era and understand the hallmarks of Victorian taste. Several of her workshop creations were on display at the competition including the 2nd Place winner, Karen Wooddell.

The Civic Club of Oakland set up an on-site maker’s space for anyone wanting to create a last-minute entry. For ten dollars, they supplied a base hat and all the trimmings for success. They also generously accepted and organized signups for the Victorian Hat Competition and the Beard & Mustache Contest.

Planned to be an annual event, women are encouraged to enter in 2024. Join the Victorian Chautauqua mailing list for announcements.

Stunning Entries

The judges were tasked with the difficult task of selecting the winner. Each hat was striking in its own way. Both the Victorian Hat and the Beard & Mustache contestants paused for a group photo.
