The Victorian Chautauqua Is Back
The global pandemic forced many festival to cancel in 2020, leaving the Victorian Chautauqua no choice but to move the entire program to 2021. Th much-anticipated weekend will unfold July 10th and 11th with fascinating lectures, historical portrayals, music, artisans, food and much more.
Victorian Chautauqua Looks Ahead
Plans are underway for the 2021 Victorian Chautauqua event in Mountain Lake Park. The planning committee had its first in-person meeting since the coronavirus sidelined the 2020 event. With a full schedule already assembled, the committee is enthusiastic that next year’s event will be able to take place as planned.
Thomas Edison Thinking/Sitting Stone at Swallow Falls State Park
Thomas Edison and his wife, Mina Miller Edison, share a few contemplative moments along Muddy Creek upstream from the falls. Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and Henry Ford, who called themselves the Vagabonds, camped near the falls, located in scenic Garrett County, with their families for almost a week in late July, 1921.
Chautauqua Women Move Mountains
The ratification of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote, celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2020. What is now being called the "Year of the Woman", will also unfold at the Victorian Chautauqua in Mountain Lake Park, MD on July 11 and 12.
The Civil War At Home
Noted author and Civil War historian, Steven French will be a presenter at the 2020 Victorian Chautauqua in Mountain Lake Park on Sunday, July 12. The Hedgesville, West Virginia native is nationally recognized on Confederate guerilla warfare in the eastern-theater. He will be speaking on the importance and role of the B&O Railroad in western Maryland and what it took to keep the line up and running in the face of repeated Rebel attacks.
Mountain Lake Park Announces the 2020 Victorian Chautauqua
“We were happy to host this year's event,” said Sincell who donned a period tuxedo and top hat throughout the weekend. “Mountain Lake Park was founded as a Chautauqua community so reviving programming of this nature in our town was a perfect fit.”
A Tiny Trend
"I now pronounce you man and wife," announced Charles "Chuck" Hershman who presided over the wedding of legendary, Tom Thumb and Lavinia Warren at Bethel Methodist Church in Mountain Lake Park. The 1950 lavish ceremony was a re-enactment roughly 80 years after the death of Tom Thumb, the 3-foot, 4-inch performer who rose to stardom and captured worldwide attention.
Cookin' Up History
As she dug deeper, the recipe books were not all Mary discovered. She found fascinating letters from and to her great-grandmother, Lillian Byrne Morris Sincell, and at a time when most women's lives rarely strayed beyond the kitchen walls and favorite recipes.
