Starting a Movement

The Thompson Rest Home for Deaconesses became the first of its kind, providing a retreat for female clergy at a summer boarding home that, at its peak, offered 40 rooms. Today, “The Deaconess,” as it is fondly called, is the headquarters for the Mountain Lake Park Historical Association. Restoration plans and fundraising efforts are ongoing to reinvigorate Mountain Lake Park’s oldest standing cottage that was built in 1882 to house the first minister and his family.
